Understanding Gold
Module 2 — What Is XAUUSD?
XAU is the international code for one troy ounce of gold. XAUUSD is therefore the price of one troy ounce of gold in US dollars, quoted exactly like a currency pair: gold is the base, the dollar is the quote.
- Buying XAUUSD means expecting gold to strengthen against the dollar
- Selling XAUUSD means expecting gold to weaken against the dollar
- You are trading a price, not taking delivery of metal
- Contract specifications — lot size, pip definition and swap — vary by broker and must be checked
Because specifications differ between brokers, never assume the pip value you used elsewhere applies. Confirm it on the account you actually trade.
Key concepts
- XAU represents a troy ounce of gold
- USD is the quote currency
- Broker specifications vary
Practical example
XAUUSD at 2350 means one troy ounce of gold is quoted at 2,350 US dollars.
Common mistake
Assuming every broker uses the same point value and contract size.
