Understanding Gold
Module 3 — Why Gold Is Different
A currency pair reflects the relative health of two economies. Gold reflects something broader: confidence. When confidence in currencies, policy or stability falls, demand for gold typically rises.
- It is a recognised safe-haven asset in periods of stress
- It pays no yield, so it competes directly with interest-bearing assets
- It is held by central banks as a reserve
- It moves in larger dollar ranges than most currency pairs
This is why gold can rally on bad news that would weaken a currency, and why a trader who treats XAUUSD as 'just another pair' is repeatedly surprised.
Key concepts
- Gold can act as a store of value
- Gold pays no yield
- Several forces may influence demand
Practical example
During stress, investors may seek gold, but interest rates and dollar strength can pull price in another direction.
