Support & Resistance

Part Two — Classifying Levels

Chapter 5 — Internal vs External Support & Resistance

Within the InstaSwich methodology, levels are also classified by their position within the larger range.

Official InstaSwich definition · External Support & Resistance

“The major market boundary — the outer edge that contains the current range.”

Official InstaSwich definition · Internal Support & Resistance

“Smaller reactions inside the larger range.”

EXTERNAL RESISTANCEEXTERNAL SUPPORTinternalinternal
External boundaries contain the range; internal levels organise the movement within it.

Illustrative example

External levels are where the highest-quality reactions occur, because the whole market can see them. Internal levels explain the movement between the boundaries — where price pauses, where a leg ends, where a retest is likely.

Why the distinction matters

  • It stops you taking an internal reaction as though it were a range boundary
  • It sets realistic targets — from an external boundary, the first internal level is a sensible first objective
  • It clarifies the difference between a pullback inside a range and a genuine break of the range

A trader who cannot tell internal from external will take the right setup in the wrong place. This distinction is one of the most practical ideas in the entire foundation.

Key concepts

  • External S&R forms range boundaries
  • Internal S&R organises movement inside
  • Context determines realistic targets

Practical example

Price can reject internal resistance and still remain inside a larger bullish range.

Common mistake

Mistaking an internal pullback for a break of the external structure.
